Audiences Insight Officer, South West Museum Development


Pay: £26,822 - £30,153

The South West Museum Development (SWMD) team is seeking a creative and driven individual with significant experience working in an arts or cultural environment to join our small, proactive team.
  • You will have responsibility for leading the programme’s audiences theme. You will work with museums across the region and relevant sector bodies (e.g. Audience Agency) to develop and deliver a range of audience development projects/initiatives, promoting the adoption of consistent audience data collection, providing training and consultancy and advice services.
  • You will lead our research, evaluation and data collection programmes with museums, working in collaboration with partner Museum Development providers across England using the data to support advocacy for the social and economic value of museums. You will advise on effective data collection methods and approaches to audience evaluation in difference museum contacts and for difference museum stakeholders, such as funders.
  • You will be confident working with both qualitative and quantitative data and will spend time communicating with museum staff and volunteers across the region on how to collect and use data in their organisations.
This full time role will be based at Bristol Museum & Art Gallery but will involve regular regional and occasional national travel. This post is project funded by Arts Council England and employed by Bristol City Council within the Bristol Culture department.

You will play an integral role in contributing to, supporting, developing and advocating for the arts sector in the city in line with the city’s Cultural Strategy and Bristol City Council priorities, ensuring Bristol continues to be one of the UK’s leading creative cities.
We are looking for a self-motivated, driven, articulate individual who has experience of arts development, provide strategic direction, oversee and monitor funding, grant funds and payments to arts organisations in the city. You will be supporting the delivery of arts programmes and projects which will include fundraising, training and reporting. A key part of the role is to offer advice and guidance to artists and organisations.
You will be required to work with a range of stakeholders, ensure that projects are delivered in accordance with council policies and priorities and to oversee budgets, develop income generation models and submit funding applications to support arts sector development.

Victorian Christmas at Blaise House - Volunteers needed.


Bristol Museum Volunteers have a lovely Victorian Christmas day planned at Blaise next weekend and they could do with a few more pairs of hands, primarily to help run the craft activities (they will be led by a freelancer), and some general setting up and packing down.

The Holburne Museum in Bath is seeking a Philanthropy Officer to join its team. The post holder’s role will be to work closely with the Head of Philanthropy to create a culture of philanthropic giving, manage and develop memberships, cultivate and steward supporters, and provide the day-to-day support needed in a busy fundraising office.
Applicants should have at least three years’ experience in fundraising, an interest in the arts and the ability to relate to people at all levels. 
This position would suit a self-starter who can show initiative but still be able to work effectively in a team.

Invigilators needed for 'Death: The Human Experience'


Bristol Museum and Art Gallery launched their new exhibition last week and its already proving to be very popular.

They are looking to build a large team of volunteers to help support our Front of House staff with invigilating the exhibition. The role will include helping explain the key objects and themes to the public as well as making sure it doesn’t become over crowded. They will give you full training and show you how to work with the more controversial areas of the exhibition.

Volunteers are welcome to work flexible hours to suit their own schedules, just let them know what you would like to offer and they can fit you in to the rota. If you would like to get involved or find out more about the exhibition then please get in contact via -museum.volunteering@bristol.gov.uk
The Museum will be starting inductions next week on a 1 to 1 basis so please specify when would be an easy time for you to come to the Museum (we will run inductions till we have a large enough team).

Development Manager - Bath and North East Somerset Council

Supporting the development of the Roman Baths, Fashion Museum, Victoria Art Gallery, Bath Record Office and ‘City of Bath’ World Heritage Site.
You will attract external funds through fundraising campaigns, sponsorship opportunities and corporate giving schemes. Where appropriate you will work through the charitable Roman Baths Foundation when fundraising for education and conservation projects in the Roman Baths. The first task of this maternity cover post will be to fundraise for the Roman Baths Archway Centre, contributing to the development of major new education and learning facilities in the Roman Baths and a new World Heritage Centre for Bath.
You will be educated to degree level with a post-graduate qualification in a relevant discipline such as marketing, communications or project management. You will have a proven track record of attracting significant financial contributions from external sources and experience of successfully developing schemes for fundraising, sponsorship and corporate giving. You will be personally well organised with exceptional presentation and project management skills and a high standard of written English. The post is based at the Pump Room in Bath.

M Shed Volunteers Required for Exhibition Event

We are running an event in conjunction with the “Open For Business” exhibition currently in the temporary exhibition gallery at M Shed. We will need 6 volunteers if possible who will help with following:

· Pop up photo exhibition on top floor foyer, copying peoples images of working life of Bristol and capturing their stories
· Pop up photo booth for families, around the subject of what children want to be when they grow up
· Generally helping with letting people know about the various activities / talks going on that day.

This is a new and exciting opportunity to join our small team in Bath promoting East Asian art and culture at the Museum of East Asian Art.
You will provide crucial administrative support to the Communications & Events Manager (who will be your line manager) along with other members of the team by ensuring all aspects of the office run smoothly. This is a new positing - you will be a creative self-starter able to use your initiative to develop it into a role that will make you completely indispensable!
We are looking for an individual with exceptionally strong organisational skills who is experienced in setting up and maintaining office systems and databases. The Museum is going through a period of interesting development with a new and ambitious Forward Plan, developing community outreach programme and expanded educational delivery. You will play a vital role in helping the Museum manage this period of transition and development smoothly.
This is a part-time position which will require a degree of flexibility with hours ideally spread throughout the week and some weekend working. We are a small team, so it is vital that you are a team-player with a proactive attitude, and able to ‘hit the ground running’. It would be particularly useful if you have local knowledge and experience of working in the voluntary sector. Knowledge or experience of Asian communities and culture is not necessary but would be an advantage.

Volunteer Evaluation Assistant - Museum of East Asian Art



Duration: Feb – June 2015, 2 days a week (between Tuesday – Thursday)
Location: Museum of East Asian Art, 12 Bennett Street, Bath, BA1 2QJ
Working Location: From home with regular meetings in Bristol or Bath

The position of voluntary evaluation assistant functions to support the MEAA community engagement officer in the design and delivery of a public engagement evaluation. Specifically this role will contribute to the development of a series of questionnaires, surveys and participatory evaluation activities. These evaluation processes will be rolled out at The Lunar New Year Extravaganza event and at a series of arts workshops due to be delivered in spring 2015.

Bristol Museum Volunteers - Wallace and Gromit 'Characters from Clay'


Bristol Museum Volunteers  are running a couple of events to coincide with the current Wallace & Gromit from the drawing board exhibition in M Shed and  are looking for a few people to help with the activities on the day;

Wallace and Gromit 'Characters from Clay'
Tuesday 12th August and Tuesday 26th August
9.30am – 4.00 pm

Visitors will be given the chance to make their favourite Aardman character from clay with the help of one of their expert model makers –participants can choose from Gromit, Shaun the Sheep or Morph. 

We require 3 volunteers per day that are interested in arts/crafts and could help anyone that needed had with their model, and also to help tidy up after each session.

Breaks will be provided throughout the day.

Volunteers Required for:
Information Desk
  • Informing visitors about the activities which are running around M Shed, as well as highlighting the harbour trips being run by The Matthew
  • Handing out trails around the galleries
Craft activities
  • Will be running pilgrim badge and pilgrim puppet making
Dressing Up and Photo Booth
  • Helping children dress up in replica clothing and ensuring flow of visitors using the photo booth
Finds Handling
  • Working with the Finds Liaison Officer to run a finds handling and identification table
  • Encouraging visitors to see the related objects which are on display in the galleries

 Overview and Background
The Museum of East Asian Art is an educational charity with a small staff.  We are seeking to appoint a Volunteer Coordinator with strong organisational and communication skills who is a team-player with a proactive attitude and has the ability to prioritise workloads.  As a Volunteer Coordinator, you are directly responsible to the Education and Development Manager. 
The role of the Volunteer Coordinator will be to help establish the Volunteer Programme, provide training, and recruit a sufficient pool of local volunteers to cover the museum shop, as well as address other volunteering needs within the organisation.
This role will take place on a short-term 19 week contract, which will include 1 ½ days a week – 7 hours on Saturday and 4 hours during the week on Monday or Tuesday.
The role would also compliment the Students Skill Development Programme, which aims to recruit around six students who would commit to a six months period leading up to and including the Museum’s annual Lunar New Year event.
The volunteer coordinator will also manage the Volunteer Reward Scheme, which includes a Christmas celebration at the Museum, as well as a post Lunar New Year celebration.
Previous experience in working on a volunteering programme is highly desirable. Additional experience in museums and other similar areas of work will also be highly valued.

Museum Traineeship , at the Royal Albert Memorial Museum

This 12 month traineeship will provide a positive opportunity to obtain and develop museum skills and experience across the broad spectrum of museum natural history curatorial work.  Our aim is to provide the successful candidate with a range of collections management experience including data management, object handling and photography, partnership working, digital technologies and development of best practice.  The trainee’s professional development will be delivered by RAMM and project partners and be supported by a training plan.
The trainee will assist with the delivery and dissemination of a project to reunite the specimens (and other objects) collected aboard HMS Challenger (1872-76) in the form of an online database. M Shed Volunteer Opportunity 8th May

From Bristol Museum Volunteers: 
As some of you may be aware we have been working on an exhibition called You Make Bristol for the last year, the project was to organise a display in M Shed where 40 individuals and groups that have helped shape Bristol were nominated and chosen by volunteers and community partners and the time has come for the images to go up. We are having a launch event in M Shed to celebrate this wonderful achievement in co-curation.
The event will take place on the 8th of May from 6pm till 8pm in M Shed and will be attended by all the people involved in helping make it happen and we were looking for a few volunteers to help us make sure everything runs smoothly.
Volunteers would help with signing in guests and showing them around the display.
