The Andrew Brownsword Gallery at the University of Bath announces its inaugural Art Prize, awarded for submissions that reflect, represent, capture or depict modern day scientific phenomena as studied by academics at The University’s Faculty of Science.

Shortlisted entries will be exhibited in the Andrew Brownsword Gallery between 15 September and 13 October, with the winning selections announced at a special ceremony in October.

All artists are eligible to enter, whether amateur, student, graduate or professional. Painting, drawing, sculpture, film, mixed media, photography and all forms of contemporary visual arts will be considered. Submissions with a site-specific or performance element are also eligible, provided arrangements for exhibiting can be made.

Andrew Brownsword Gallery is based at The Edge creation centre at the University of Bath
The Edge is an arts and creativity hub informed by the context of the University of Bath. We encourage and nurture arts/research collaborations, providing a place where artists, audiences, researchers and academics can find new perspectives and fertile ground to showcase new thinking and ideas. Here, mechanical engineers meet sculptors interested in moving structures, architects work with artists to shed new light on the nature of play and how architecture influences it, artists bring together inventing and engineering expertise to create artworks of scientific complexity.

Our year-round programme of exhibitions, performing arts presentations, talks, arts classes, family and community events, provide experiences of educational, emotional and intellectual stimulus, all based around our ethos of bringing together arts, research and adventure. Our focus is on participatory programmes and our belief is that everyone can be creative and contribute.

FaB curators’ shows can include: performance, intervention, installation, multi-media and video work, photography, drawing, painting, sculpture and all disciplines in between.

Curating a show for FaB is a great chance to gain experience in this competitive field, to realise your own exhibition or event, to make new contacts and network. In past years FaB has initiated exchanges between artists and curators from Manchester, Swansea, Oxford, Bath, Hungary, Poland, Canada and beyond.

Selection by committee will take place in November, those selected will be invited to attend a curator’s meeting after which your show will be advertised in FaB’s November call out to artists.

FaB will offer you admin support, practical advice through regular meetings, mentoring from past curators and exhibition space.

Actor Casting Call - Young Voices Films

The company:

Suited and Booted Studios are a production company based in Bath.

We specialise in producing work that is educational and informative for charities

and the public sector.

The project:

We are working with young people who access CAMHS (Children and Adolescent Mental Health Services).

They are producing a series of 4 short films that address issues around young people’s mental health.

The final films will be disseminated via social media, on the internet and as part of an educational pack.

Overview:

The films are short 2/3-minute dramas. Each film shows the story of one young person and highlights a particular

challenge they may be facing with their mental health. I.e. anxiety, eating disorder etc. During the film they’re

becoming increasingly unwell but ultimately they realise they need help. The films aim to give young people facing

mental health challenges an understanding of their own ability to ask for help. The final films will be screened online.

Support Roles we are still seeking to fill:

The General Manager is the senior staff administrative post for Bath Philharmonia, a professional freelance orchestra in the Southwest. The General Manager is responsible and accountable for all the operational aspects of the orchestra (performing the tasks personally or supervising others, including an orchestra manager/fixer, development manager, education manager and bookkeeper) in a season comprising 12-15 concert performances and 12-15 educational events annually. The General Manager reports directly to the Board of Trustees, and the General Manager’s artistic counterpart is the Music Director. The position is part-time, 3 days (24 hours) a week.


PERSONAL QUALIFICATIONS:

• Experience as an administrator in the classical music industry, with a sound knowledge of orchestral repertoire and experience of working with musicians and leading administrative teams

About the role

You will contribute to the developing area of 3D Digital Design and Making within the Bath School of Art and Design, ensuring that the facility systems encourage experimentation and learning within a practical and safe environment.

You will contribute to the delivery of 3D Digital Design technical skills especially in the production of objects using CAD/CAM equipment such as 3D printing or CNC milling, in support of academic programmes or research.  The role demands the ability to provide planned technical demonstrations to groups or individuals and technical support to students in self-directed projects or for research activities.

You will liaise with academic programme/module leaders to plan activities, which reflect expertise, current and emerging thinking in 3D Digital Design and Making.

You would also be expected to make an active contribution to the range of other work and responsibilities carried out by all technicians working within the School, such as contributing to the transportation of work/objects and light construction for activities such as external events, degree shows and exhibitions.

About you

You will have in-depth knowledge and experience of working within the area of 3D Digital Design and Making, including experience with 3D digital printing, CAD/CAM equipment, Adobe CS and 3D software.  You will hold an NVQ4, NEBSS or Degree in relevant practical subject or significant relevant professional experience in this specialist area.  You will have strong communication skills, a keen interest in higher education and be able to evidence a pro-active approach to development and safety in the specialist 3D Digital Design subject area.  Flexibility as well as the ability to work effectively on your own and as part of a team is essential.

Artist Call Out - To Bathe, FaB Festival 2015

Welcome to the call-out for FaB Festival 2015

To Bathe
You are invited to submit works or proposals (new or re-presented) that explore bathing. Any medium is accepted including storytelling and performance. Works can experiment with the allegorical, mythological and literary or address primal fears such as drowning and our vulnerability whilst nude. Representations and interpretations of swimming, showering, solo or group bathing are welcomed, The exhibitions aim is allow the audience to become voyeurs of others whilst they bathe and create a reassessment of the everyday act of bathing.

It is proposed that a wooden victorian style bathing machine will be built in order to house some of the works, creating a mobile exhibition space that can travel around the city on a Bathing Trail.

A little bit about FaB
FaB is Bath’s only annual visual arts festival. We actively promote and celebrate contemporary art, showcasing early career artists and curators, and those who find it difficult to break into (or prefer to operate outside of) the gallery based art scene. Non-profit and entirely run by volunteers, FaB Festival occupies ‘alternative’ exhibition spaces, from empty shops to street corners.

Studios Residency/ Gallery and Studios Internship - Bath Artists Studios

Bath Artists' Studios are very pleased to offer a residency opportunity for an artist in need of a studio. BAS can offer a studio space and an exhibition in the BAS gallery. The resident artist will also hold the post of Gallery and Studios intern, volunteering one morning a week (3 hours, probably on a Wednesday/ Thursday) for the Studios.

As our artist in Residence, you will become part of the Studios community, with the opportunity to meet artists, get involved in events and take advantage of all our facilities.

Residency

The Studios can offer one of our workshop spaces rent free for the duration residency. This space has exterior access and parking, and is suitable for all types of arts practice. The space does not have a sink.
The residency will take place from mid March to end June 2015 with an exhibition in the BAS gallery in June. The resident artist will be invited to give a talk about their work at the end of April.

Internship

As Studios/ Gallery intern, our resident artist will carry out jobs such as painting walls, organising storage space, assisting with exhibitions, fixing things, changing light bulbs and other odd jobs. You must be generally handy, with a good problem solving ability and positive attitude to work.
