Plymouth College of Art is seeking applications for exhibition proposals from contemporary visual artists based in the South West Region.

Two artists will be selected for short solo exhibitions in The Gallery at Plymouth College of Art between Jan-March 2017. Artists will be awarded £2000 to produce their exhibition, with additional support from the college – including production, marketing/press, equipment, an exhibition launch and key interpretation materials.

The South West, as defined by Arts Council England, includes: Devon, Dorset, Gloucestershire, Hampshire and Somerset, Bath & North East Somerset, Bournemouth, Bristol, Cornwall & the Isles of Scilly, Isle of Wight, North Somerset, Plymouth, Poole, Portsmouth, South Gloucestershire, Southampton, Swindon, Torbay and Wiltshire.

The South West Showcase is a recurring open call platform, showcasing artists from across the South West region. The showcase aims to uncover and celebrate the talent of contemporary artists working and living in the South West and to present a long-term commitment from Plymouth College of Art to profiling and supporting the practices of artists in this region.  Artists previously supported through this project include Hannah James, Bryony Gillard, Abigail Reynolds, Kit Poulson and Marie Toesland.

The Gallery at Plymouth College of Art is a public exhibition space located in the heart of the city centre and at the front of the College. The Gallery programme aims to enrich, enhance and support the teaching and learning of the College, whilst also engaging with a wider public audience.

Marmite Prize for Painting

Run by painters for painters since 2006, the Marmite Prize for Painting is the only erratic, challenging and nomadic biennial open submission painting exhibition in the UK and Ireland. The prize is now open for submissions. The application deadline is Sunday March 20th.

The paintings will be subject to two stages, shortlisting for exhibition by the selection committee (by digital image), and subsequent judging (of works in person) by the judges.
Shortlisted artists will be notified by 20th April when we will make arrangements to collect the work from artists’ studios (UK mainland, Ireland and Northern Ireland only) free of charge.
International entries are welcome. Shortlisted international artists will be required to arrange transportation of works to London in May for the first exhibition, and collection of unsold works from the Highlanes Gallery in Drogheda, Ireland in September.
Winners will be announced at the opening of the exhibition at Block 336 in London on 3rd June 2016.
A full colour catalogue will be published to accompany the exhibition, shortlisted artists will receive a free copy of the catalogue.

There will be one main winner, two runners up and a student prize.
Main Prize - Along with the prestige of being the Winner of the Marmite Prize for Painting V and the opportunity to be a judge for the Marmite Prize For Painting VI, the winner will also receive a specially commissioned sculpture by an artist - To be Announced.
Student Prize - Residency at Bon Volks, Margate, UK, to include free accommodation +£500 towards travel and expenses. (Please note you must currently be a student to be eligible for the Student Prize. Students are also eligible to win the main prize.)
The two runners up will receive a pat on the back.

Utopia Dystopia is an ambitious series of exhibitions and events planned for the city of Bath during 2016. This creative initiative is inspired by the 500th anniversary of the publication of Utopia, Thomas More's reflections on the idea of an ideal society. Since 1516, the year of Utopia's release, the world has witnessed countless attempts to establish a perfectly ordered community, in reality as well as in print. Yet the frequent outcome of such ambitions has been the decay of Utopia into Dystopia. From no-place to bad-place. In modern times the two concepts seem inseparable. FaB16 is inviting artists in all media to particiate in a series of imaginative responses to the themes of utopia or dystopia, or both. The FaB projects are being complemented, or supported, by events involving other Bath-based cultural organisations, including Bath Fringe, Bath Spa University, the Holburne Museum and Komedia. The key exhibition and performance venue is Walcot Chapel during FaB16 (27th May - 12th June), for several decades one of Bath's most popular locations for contemporary art. Artworks of all kinds are invited for submission, whether image, object or sound, moving or still, interior or exterior. We are also keen to recieve submissions from artists interested in transforming the space, initiating live events, performances or workshops. *Brian Botting, Master of the Painter-Stainers’ Company from 2003-04, has kindly bequeathed a £5,000 annual prize to be awarded to an artist aged 30 or under for an outstanding representation of the human figure.

Rules of the Prize

The Lynn Painter-Stainers Prize is open to living artists over the age of 18, who are resident in the British Isles. Only original, two-dimensional works in any painting or drawing media, that have been completed in the last three years, and that have not been previously exhibited, are eligible. All works must be for sale, except commissioned portraits. The judges’ decision will be final and binding.

Entries will not be accepted from members of the Charity and Education Committee of the Painter-Stainers’ Company.

Conditions of Entry

Artists may submit digital images of up to four works. Works of art submitted must not exceed 60 inches (152 cms) in their largest dimension including frame.

The standard entry fee is £15 per work and student entry fee is  £8 payable at the time of entry.

Paintings in Hospitals is seeking a Regional Coordinator to increase the number of health and social care sites using its services in the South West.

Based at home, the Regional Coordinator for the South West (covering: Bristol, Gloucestershire, Wiltshire, Somerset, and Dorset)will generate artwork loans and renew existing loans on behalf of the charity. Working with volunteers, they will facilitate engagement activities in relation to the selection process and oversee transportation and installation of artworks in the charity’s art collection, located at Southmead Hospital, Bristol.

Paintings in Hospitals is a registered charity that uses art and creativity to improve the wellbeing of people with illness, addiction, autism and disability along with the people caring for them. Through our work we create uplifting environments, benefiting the lives of 1.8 million patients, visitors and staff every year.

The ideal candidate will have excellent communication skills (written and verbal), knowledge of the health and/or social care sectors and a passion for visual arts. A motivated individual, you will be results-driven with a track record of achieving agreed targets. You will also have the organisational skills to prioritise and manage a diverse workload and the ability to relate to people from a wide range of backgrounds. 

The successful applicant will have two years’ previous sales experience, excellent account management skills and have an understanding of how Paintings in Hospitals’ services can improve health and wellbeing.

We are currently looking for experienced Painting Assistants to work in our Artist Studio based in Gloucestershire on a full-time, fixed term basis. Our ideal applicants should have great draftsmanship skills, a keen eye for detail and a good working knowledge of colour theory. We are looking for people who are friendly, flexible and enthusiastic with excellent timekeeping. Art handling, hanging and packing experience is desired but not essential.

Key requirements:

• Fine Art Diploma or equivalent with a background in the Arts or Graphics
• Experience of fabrication and installation of mainly 2D artwork projects under specific direction
• Experience & skills of using various paint mediums - acrylics, enamels, oils, etc
• Ability to look after and keep the working environment and the staff areas tidy
• Ability to look after and maintain any work related equipment including tools
• Ability to work accurately & with care (drawing, painting, measuring etc.)
• Good colour matching & paint mixing skills
• Strong communication skills
• The ability to work well within a team, or alone

Desired skills:

• Canvas stretching and priming
• Wide knowledge of painting techniques & materials
• Familiar with handling artworks (Sculpture/ Paintings) and fragile/delicate objects
• Computer literate -ideally Mac’s- Photoshop, Excel etc.
• Initiative & strong problem solving skills
• Confident with using a variety of tools (screwdriver, hammer etc)

Open Call - RWA 162nd Annual Open Exhibition

Submissions of painting, drawing, printmaking, photography, sculpture, architecture and moving image from unknown, emerging and established artists

The Royal West of England Academy holds an Annual Open Exhibition now in its 162nd year. As the name suggests anyone can enter their work for this mixed discipline show. A selection panel assesses every entry and last year 560 works by 348 artists made it into the final exhibition. All work is for sale and the exhibition attracts art-lovers and art-buyers from far and wide. The exhibition is open to the public from 12 October – 7 December 2014.

Artists are encouraged to submit recent work (produced within the last 3 years) and all works must be for sale, with prices predominantly under £10,000. Each artist can submit a maximum of three works, which must not have been exhibited before at the RWA, and there is a submission fee for each entry.

Open Call for Painters. Not based in Bristol - but a good opportunity

PAINT LIKE YOU MEAN IT : IR11 PAINTING PRIZE OPEN CALL 

Interview Room 11 is seeking submissions for its inaugural painting prize and exhibition, Paint Like You Mean It.   This is an international call open to any artist aged 18 or over.  Artists are invited to submit one work that they deem to be “painting”.  This could be two or three dimensional work but must relate to the practice or medium of painting in some way.  Work selected will demonstrate the versatility of paint, and show how contemporary artists are redefining the nature of the medium whilst still being rooted in the traditions and histories of painting.   The dates for the exhibition are 28 May - 14 June 2014.  Paintings must not exceed 180 cm on their longest side.  If successful, artists must cover shipping and transport costs to and from the gallery.

Entrants should submit one image in JPEG format and no larger than 3MB in size to interviewroom11@dss.theforest.org.uk by midnight on 15 March 2014.  Images submitted after this time will not be accepted.  Please include the title and dimensions of the work. There is a £5 submission fee for all entries which can be paid via paypal account to the following email: interviewroom11@dss.theforest.org.uk

All submissions will be judged by the IR11 gallery committee and a panel of external judges who will be announced soon.  The winning artist will be invited to hold a solo show at IR11 in 2015.  A full colour catalogue will accompany the exhibition.
