Utopia Dystopia is an ambitious series of exhibitions and events planned for the city of Bath during 2016. This creative initiative is inspired by the 500th anniversary of the publication of Utopia, Thomas More's reflections on the idea of an ideal society. Since 1516, the year of Utopia's release, the world has witnessed countless attempts to establish a perfectly ordered community, in reality as well as in print. Yet the frequent outcome of such ambitions has been the decay of Utopia into Dystopia. From no-place to bad-place. In modern times the two concepts seem inseparable. FaB16 is inviting artists in all media to particiate in a series of imaginative responses to the themes of utopia or dystopia, or both. The FaB projects are being complemented, or supported, by events involving other Bath-based cultural organisations, including Bath Fringe, Bath Spa University, the Holburne Museum and Komedia. The key exhibition and performance venue is Walcot Chapel during FaB16 (27th May - 12th June), for several decades one of Bath's most popular locations for contemporary art. Artworks of all kinds are invited for submission, whether image, object or sound, moving or still, interior or exterior. We are also keen to recieve submissions from artists interested in transforming the space, initiating live events, performances or workshops. It is essential that works bear reference to their making process, or machines can be exhibited as art objects in their own right.

Prosthetic Impulse - Call Out to Artists

With every tool man is perfecting his own organs… removing the limits of their functioning…  Man has as it were become a kind of prosthetic God… but these organs have not grown onto him, and they still give him trouble at times.
(Sigmund Freud, Civilisation and Its Discontents).

In modern culture, the creation and use of prosthetics is commonplace.  From pacemakers to cameras, we replace limbs; substitute human interaction; even supplant memory.  Man and machine have become inexplicably intertwined in their co-dependence, but it is not always clear where the edges lie.  Even the word ‘stump’ is used to describe both the body that is maimed and the prosthetic that replaces it.   
The blurred divisions between man and machine also bring to light our own behavioral processes; the made becomes a reflection of its maker.  In his film, The Thieving Hand, Thomas Alva Edison portrays an armless beggar, provided with a prosthetic arm once belonging to a thief, and against his will (but not the arm’s), starts stealing.  Such transfers of human agency to material objects can leave us at their mercy, however many artists actively seek out this displacement of authority.  
‘Prosthetic Impulse’ is an exploration into the function of the ‘art machine’: constructed devices that assume the role of the artist.  This exhibition will investigate the effects of bypassing human agency, challenging the authority of the artist in the production of an artwork, questioning where and when the creative act actually occurs.  It will also explore how the act of distancing the artist’s hand from the creative process can be used to generate chance procedures. 
This is a call out for artists who construct devices as a process of creating work.  It is essential the works bear reference to their making process, or alternatively the art machines themselves can be exhibited as art objects in their own right.   These could range from the highly technical to the unassumingly simple.  Any mediums are welcome.  Work can be static or kinetic; digital or analogue; interactive, performative, 2D, 3D, installation, moving image, sound, or anything in between.

Submission must include artists statement (200 words max), exhibition proposal (500 words max), supporting images (jpeg, max 1mb each) and link to website and/or blog.

Deadline for submission is 14th February 2015. Any submissions after this date will not be considered.
Submission is free, but selected artists will be asked to pay an exhibiting fee of £15. All necessary equipment must be supllied and insured by the artist.

Video Call Out for Artists of All Disciplines

FRINGE ARTS BATH (FAB) AND IGNITE UNIVERSITY OF BATH ARE CALLING OUT TO ARTISTS 

offering the opportunity to reinterpret short presentations by University of Bath researchers to create collaborative video pieces that will highlight both art and science, and how they can work together to engage people in new and exciting ways.

The final outcome is to be presented as short a video piece, in the broadest possible sense of the term. Practitioners from all disciplines are welcome, we are very open to ideas.

After a presentation evening early December (date confirmed asap) at 44AD Artspace including Scientists’ & Artists talks, a screening and drinks, selected video pieces will be showcased over the following days in shop windows around Bath.

FRINGE ARTS BATH - DEADLINE 30th APRIL  

The FaB Open Prize is an annual competition and exhibition which is truly open, allowing all to enter: early career artists, those who exhibit work regularly and those who prefer operating outside the gallery-based scene.

Inviting work from artists practising contemporary art in the fields of painting, print, drawing, photography, film, sound, sculpture, installation and performance. Selected works will be shown as part of a curated exhibition at the FaB space during the 2014 festival.

There will be two £75 cash prizes awarded by this year's judges, along with gift vouchers for the winner of the people's choice.

Tall Tales - Call for Artists, Designers and Writers for Fringe Arts Bath 2014

Do you want to put your fiction on the walls?

Tall Tales is looking for Artists, Designers and Writers who would like to create work directly on the wall for Fringe Arts Bath 2014. Bath's annual art festival will run from 23rd May - 8th June this year.

This show will take the form of temporary works applied directly to the exhibition walls. The space itself as a canvas to work on. The works will spill, climb and overlap - the artists working with the theme of 'Tall Tales'. Each artist will have their own space as well as areas to overlap and work in response to each other.

20:20 VISION IS BACK!

20:20 Vision explores the current mindset of 'Generation Y' through comissioning new 10 minute plays by young writers aged between 18 - 30. Utilising the vast space of The Old Theatre Royal Bath, we set the plays site-specificallythroughout the venue -taking the audeince on an exciting journey. 

This year we are playing for 8 performances during the last week of the Bath Fringe, and are expecting to have a very high level of interest from press, industry and audiences. We are always on the lookout for nurturing new talent, and first time writers are especially welcome to apply.
