Artists and artist groups of Bristol and beyond: Feel It festival is looking to commission a new performance piece or screen work and applications are now open.

One in five GPs currently experience some form of anxiety or depression and researchers at the University of Bristol want to know why.

You are invited to create a new high-quality collaborative work that explores, examines and captures research in this area.

We are offering up to £3000 plus a performance or screening slot (as appropriate) at the festival, which runs from 17th - 20th November 2016 at Circomedia.

Marmite Prize for Painting

Run by painters for painters since 2006, the Marmite Prize for Painting is the only erratic, challenging and nomadic biennial open submission painting exhibition in the UK and Ireland. The prize is now open for submissions. The application deadline is Sunday March 20th.

The paintings will be subject to two stages, shortlisting for exhibition by the selection committee (by digital image), and subsequent judging (of works in person) by the judges.
Shortlisted artists will be notified by 20th April when we will make arrangements to collect the work from artists’ studios (UK mainland, Ireland and Northern Ireland only) free of charge.
International entries are welcome. Shortlisted international artists will be required to arrange transportation of works to London in May for the first exhibition, and collection of unsold works from the Highlanes Gallery in Drogheda, Ireland in September.
Winners will be announced at the opening of the exhibition at Block 336 in London on 3rd June 2016.
A full colour catalogue will be published to accompany the exhibition, shortlisted artists will receive a free copy of the catalogue.

Student Prize - Residency at Bon Volks, Margate, UK, to include free accommodation +£500 towards travel and expenses. (Please note you must currently be a student to be eligible for the Student Prize. Students are also eligible to win the main prize.)

Prosthetic Impulse - Call Out to Artists

With every tool man is perfecting his own organs… removing the limits of their functioning…  Man has as it were become a kind of prosthetic God… but these organs have not grown onto him, and they still give him trouble at times.
(Sigmund Freud, Civilisation and Its Discontents).

In modern culture, the creation and use of prosthetics is commonplace.  From pacemakers to cameras, we replace limbs; substitute human interaction; even supplant memory.  Man and machine have become inexplicably intertwined in their co-dependence, but it is not always clear where the edges lie.  Even the word ‘stump’ is used to describe both the body that is maimed and the prosthetic that replaces it.   
The blurred divisions between man and machine also bring to light our own behavioral processes; the made becomes a reflection of its maker.  In his film, The Thieving Hand, Thomas Alva Edison portrays an armless beggar, provided with a prosthetic arm once belonging to a thief, and against his will (but not the arm’s), starts stealing.  Such transfers of human agency to material objects can leave us at their mercy, however many artists actively seek out this displacement of authority.  
‘Prosthetic Impulse’ is an exploration into the function of the ‘art machine’: constructed devices that assume the role of the artist.  This exhibition will investigate the effects of bypassing human agency, challenging the authority of the artist in the production of an artwork, questioning where and when the creative act actually occurs.  It will also explore how the act of distancing the artist’s hand from the creative process can be used to generate chance procedures. 
This is a call out for artists who construct devices as a process of creating work.  It is essential the works bear reference to their making process, or alternatively the art machines themselves can be exhibited as art objects in their own right.   These could range from the highly technical to the unassumingly simple.  Any mediums are welcome.  Work can be static or kinetic; digital or analogue; interactive, performative, 2D, 3D, installation, moving image, sound, or anything in between.

Submission must include artists statement (200 words max), exhibition proposal (500 words max), supporting images (jpeg, max 1mb each) and link to website and/or blog.

Clifton Arts Club 106th Open Exhibition

The Clifton Arts Club annual open exhibition is a show case for artists and is held at the Bristol School of Art annually in July and attracts many professional artist throughout the South West.

Selection is done by RWA academicians and we have a very large entry – hanging approximately 350 paintings and prints, as well as sculpture, ceramics and 3D work. Many of our members have been accepted by the Bath Society and the Royal West of England Academy events.

Call for Bristol Artists Participation - BSDeathdrive

BSDeathdrive is an anonymous off-line file-sharing network actively rejecting the online and virtual world. The project aims to create an interactive art distribution activity between artist and public mapping the creativity of the city and initiating a range of future activities.

At this point, we are seeking artists to participate by uploading work and files onto the Deathdrives over the following weeks throughout April so there are works/files on them in time for the official launch as part of the Bristol Art Weekender (2-5th May). The project will then go live to the general public as part of the BAW and will feature as part of an associated art trail.

Files shared up to this point will be copied and presented as part of a BSDeathdrive video/audio installation at Spike Island Open Studios throughout the weekend.

We are excited to announce that The Gallery project in Chinese Visual Festival 2014 is now open for the submission.

Application Deadline: 5th April 2014

The Gallery Project is part of the Chinese Visual Festival (CVF) 2014, which runs 7 – 17 May at King’s College London, with sessions also being held at the British Film Institute (BFI) and Riverside Studios in collaboration with DocHouse.

As an experimental project, The Gallery examines the making of an exhibition and the role of social media in PR & marketing, interpretation and participation. The Gallery is an installation set up as a physical gallery and has one exhibition space with a fixed set of equipment (TV, screen, projector, printer, lighting, etc). Artists will be invited to submit proposals for full or half-day exhibitions during The Gallery installation, which will be open to the public in the Anatomy Museum, King’s College London in central London. A total of 16 proposals will be shown within the season.

We are looking for project proposals with any art forms such as painting, installations, videos, sounds, performance and also curating projects. 

The deadline for applications is 5 April 2014. Shortlisted projects will be announced online on 11 April 2014.

The Gallery is working in partnership with China Culture Connect (www.chinacultureconnect.org) and the Cultural Institute at King’s College London (www.kcl.ac.uk/cultural) to deliver this season.

Artist Commission: Open Call

UWE in partnership with the Engine Shed (Bristol) are seeking artists to produce work for a new exhibition titled, Platform 14.
Works may be site-specific installations, interactive sculpture, video, gaming/3D platform, or print.

The commission is seeking:
• Artists who are actively engaging the viewer, or whose artwork considers the relationship between the viewer and the work, or artwork that facilitates a meaningful interaction between the work and the viewer.
• Artists with at least two years of professional practice (academic practice may be included as professional practice)
• Artists working in technologically facilitated mediums (gaming, 3D, immersive sound/light installation, GPS mapping)
• Artists whose work will be available for exhibition from 10 April 2014

All artists who meet the above criteria may apply by sending an email with the following information to bristolplatform14@gmail.com:
• Artist’s name, address, phone number
• Title of the work, a photograph of the work (or sketch if work is not yet realized)
• A description of the work (no more than 350 words). This description should detail the medium in which the work has been made, the size of the work (in dimensions), how the work should be viewed/displayed, and any technical specifications (including power, lighting or sound needed). Works that require an operator should include how the work is to be operated.
• Optional: a short statement (no more than 250 words) explaining the concept or ideology behind the work.
Work will be selected by a panel including students on the MA Curating course at UWE and relevant professional partners at Engine Shed.

Submissions should arrive no later than Monday 10 March 2014.

About Platform 14:
Taking Engine Shed’s objectives as its point of inspiration, this exhibition will explore themes of connection, journey and innovation.
Counter to linear models of history and aesthetics, PLATFORM 14 will be a model of continuity with an emphasis on the structure of the organic. Its framework will be designed around the concept of an integrated circuit where elements are inseparably associated and interconnected.
The exhibition will be structured as a journey around a circuit of interactive, immersive, and technologically facilitated artworks. The circuit will be made up of works that connect visitors from upstairs to downstairs, from past to current place and its future, and from the exhibition space to the outside world.
PLATFORM 14 is an exhibition that reflects and connects Engine Shed’s present with Bristol’s future in creative industries. The exhibition will highlight the principles of collaboration, technology and steady development, while striving to be a harbour of imagination and inspiration.

Frieze Artist Award 2014: call for entries

Frieze is pleased to announce the introduction of the Frieze Artist Award, a major new opportunity to create and present site-specific artwork at Frieze London. The award is now open for entries, to both UK and international artists between 25 and 40 years of age.

Artists are invited to propose a new work to be realized at Frieze London 2014 and produced under the auspices of Frieze Projects. The award will include: a production budget of up to 10,000 GBP, a research and development budget of up to 5,000 GBP, plus an artist’s fee, per diems and travel expenses.

The award is for site-specific work, with an inclination towards performance and installation. Proposals should respond to the experience and duration of the London fair in a thought-provoking way. Applicants will be judged on the innovative nature of their proposal and its suitability for realization at Frieze London.

Entrance to the award is by open submission and the winner will be selected by an international panel of artists and curators. The closing date for applications is 10 March 2014. The winner of the award will be announced in May 2014.

The Frieze Artist Award sits within a distinguished history of artist awards presented at Frieze Art Fair, which include the Emdash Award (2011–2013) and the Cartier Award (2006–2010). This first edition of the Frieze Artist Award also coincides with the launch of Live, a new section for galleries at the London fair that is dedicated to performative or interactive works.

Call for Artists to turn Science into Art - University of Exeter

We invite artists to submit a proposal with costings to join part of an innovative science team at the University of Exeter. The artist will join an EU funded project called ECOFLAM, part of which seeks to use art to convey the results of scientific research.

The Science

Wildfires have been part of our planet’s history for 410 million years. Throughout this long history the types of plants that have dominated Earth’s ecosystems has changed, which has influenced the type and nature of wildfires. ECOFLAM combines state-of-the-art flammability experiments with palaeontological observations of fossil plants to create estimates of the nature of ancient fires for 5 key periods in the history of our planet. It will consider whether the dominant wildfires were slow moving fires creeping through leaf litter or whether they were hot, ferocious and fast spreading fires ravaging the canopy of the trees. This distinction is important because the nature of fires influences the ability of ecosystems to recover following a fire as well as chemical cycles that operate on our planet. The project aims to determine the importance of changes in fires in the history of our ecosystems.

Artistic Exploration

We aim to explore how art can be used to represent scientific ideas. The artist will work with the team leader Dr Claire Belcher to create artistic visions of the research results. At the end of the project the team will hold an exhibition of the works at U. Exeter.

ECOFLAM will run for 5-year period. The successful artist will be subcontracted to U. Exeter. We will consider bids in the region of £10,000 for the whole project. Further budget exists for exhibition costs. Interested artists should submit an outline of how they would represent the work (limit 1000 words); send a breakdown of their fees for undertaking the project plus CV and cover letter that highlights their suitability and previous experience.

Call for Submissions : Small Story/Big City, Rich Mix

Throughout 2014, Rich Mix is looking for new/emerging performers and companies to come and tell their stories of city life, so we can present just some of these small tales that contribute to the rich tapestry of the big city.
Your stories will be funny, poignant, hidden, silly and sad. They’re likely to be tiny, they’re personal, but they – somehow – are essential. Without them the city becomes that little bit smaller.
In order for your work to be considered, you must have been working in live performance for 4 years or less. Work must be no longer than 90 minutes (excluding interval), however we will consider shorter works to be presented as part of a double or triple bill. Those with work in development or new writing are also encouraged to apply - we are happy to hear from those with work at the very early stages of development, as well as those with completed works.
If your work is chosen, you will benefit from:
