Spike Island Open Studios 2018 - Call for Volunteers



              

Every year at Spike Island, hundreds of artists and creative businesses throw open their studio doors and visitors are invited to explore their working environments. Open Studios weekend includes a programme of family friendly activities, tours, events and pop-ups by some of Bristol’s best street food traders.


We are looking for volunteers to help at various times across the weekend, including supporting artists with specific performances and projects, and helping us to inspire and assist visitors as they explore this extensive building.


Open Studios runs from Friday 4 May, 6–9pm (followed by after party until late); Saturday 5 May, 11am5pm; Sunday 6 May, 11am5pm; to Monday 7 May, 11am5pm.


Volunteers must attend an induction session on Wednesday 18 April at 56.30pm.

Artists' Programmes Coordinator - Spike Island

Spike Island is looking for a friendly, motivated and organised Volunteer Coordinator to join our lively contemporary art and design organisation, based on Bristol’s historic harbourside.
We seek an enthusiastic Volunteer Coordinator to recruit, train and support our team of volunteer gallery invigilators (currently 70 in the team.)  Volunteers play a vital role in the everyday running of the public programme at Spike Island.
The role requires someone with excellent communication and people management skills and a passion for volunteering.
This contract is offered for a minimum of six months, with possibility of extension up to twelve months.

Communications Manager - Situations


Pay: 25-28k dependent on experience

Situations is an arts producer dedicated to opening up the potential for artists to make extraordinary ideas happen in unusual and unexpected places, inspiring audiences and participants to explore new horizons. 
We commission and produce both temporary and long-term public artworks such as the current, acclaimed project Sanctum in Bristol led by artist Theaster Gates, the 100-year-long Future Library in Oslo by artist Katie Paterson; Michael Sailstorfer’s Folkestone Digs which sparked a gold rush on the South East coast last year and Alex Hartley’s Nowhereisland for the London 2012 Cultural Olympiad in 2012. 
Communications Manager
We are looking for a gifted communicator who is passionate about creating and delivering strategic campaigns for our projects and increasing and extending the profile of the organisation nationally and internationally. You will be an advocate, an early adopter, and be able to demonstrate a flair for creative ideas. You will have in-depth knowledge about the range and diversity of the most up-to-date communications tactics in the arts and an understanding of current trends and debates in arts marketing, as well as a genuine interest in reaching out beyond existing arts audiences.

Spike Island is an international centre for the development of contemporary art and design. Based in Bristol, UK, it is home to a gallery, café and working space for artists, designers and creative businesses.  A vibrant hub for production, presentation and debate, we offer opportunities for audiences to engage directly with creative practices through participation and discussion. 
Our team of Volunteers make a significant contribution to the work we do. We are currently inviting applications from individuals who would like to join our Volunteer Invigilator team. We are looking for enthusiastic people who have a keen interest in engaging with contemporary art, interacting with our visitors and a positive and helpful attitude.

Spike Island is seeking volunteers for the upcoming Cally Spooner exhibition. 

Gallery shifts are 5.5 hours long, from 11:45am – 5:15pm with a 30 minute break. Shifts are available in the gallery from Tuesday to Sunday, during exhibition periods. Other volunteering opportunities may be available outside of these hours.

Bristol Drawing Club Activity Day at Spike Island

Bristol Drawing Club Returns to Spike Island for an afternoon of fun, interactive drawing exercises and workshops. The afternoon's programme will offer a range of activities designed to cater for all ages and abilities, making this a perfect event to attend both for families as well as creative individuals looking for new ways of approaching drawing.

BRISTOL DRAWING CLUB is a social platform for drawing enthusiasts, founded by Bristol artists with a passion for promoting ‘Drawing for Everyone’. Founded in 2009, BDC is run by a team of devoted volunteers & holds regular meets and events in venues across the city, allowing artists & non-artists to mingle through a shared passion of drawing.

Cook required at Spike Island Cafe

Spike Café is a lively and unique space that provides a social hub at the heart of our thriving arts organisation.  Spike Island is an international centre for art and design, home to artists, designers and other creative practitioners as well as a year round public programme of exhibitions and events.
We are looking for a friendly and confident Cook with a calm and efficient manner to join the café staff team for a two month period from the beginning of March. 
You will have the ability to create freshly cooked café meals, sandwiches and salads, and demonstrate a flair for working with fresh seasonal ingredients and flavour combinations.  You should be experienced in portion control, food hygiene and quality control measures.
Start date beginning of March.  
Wage:  £7.00 per hour

Spike Island - Cafe Supervisor needed

Spike Café is looking for a lively, confident and friendly Supervisor to oversee the smooth running of our vibrant and unique café.  This is the social hub at the heart of our thriving arts organisation. 
Alongside Reception, Spike Café represents the face of the organisation.  The Café Supervisor plays a key role in providing a warm welcome and fantastic customer service to all users of the building. 
You will need to be a responsible individual with experience of supervising staff, overseeing front of house and kitchen operations, food preparation, cash handling and stock control, with a flexible approach to work.
The position is offered full time, including occasional weekends and evening events, at £16,320 - £17,850 per annum. (NB. we will expect to recruit at the first point of scale).
