This year, the book to be illustrated is the Folio Collection of Ghost Stories. The three stories you need to illustrate should be downloaded here – they are not available elsewhere.

The Book Illustration Competition is a unique partnership between House of Illustration and The Folio Society that seeks to identify and promote new talent in illustration. The annual international competition is open to illustrators over the age of 18, both student and professional, with the winner receiving a prestigious Folio Society commission.

Each year entrants are asked to submit three illustrations and a binding design for a particular book chosen by The Folio Society. The winner receives a highly sought-after commission, worth £5,000, to complete a total of nine illustrations and a binding design for the book, which is then published by The Folio Society. Five runners each receive £500 cash. Three prizes of the six are awarded to student entries.

Call Out to Illustrators - Paper Gallery, Bristol

At the moment we are excited to be accepting illustrator’s submissions to be a part of a group show for three weeks at PAPER Gallery. The focus of the exhibition is to represent innovative contemporary illustration in Bristol. We welcome all mediums of illustration. Exhibitors can sell prints, cards and more in the gallery shop (no invigilation needed). While there is also the opportunity to participate in a collaborative drawing and to enter a competition with the chance to win art supplies. PAPER Arts is an artistic hub aimed at promoting the work of local artists and helping talented people make a living through being creative. The application for the 'Young Illustrators Award 2014' is now open!

The Award

The Young Illustrators Award is one of the most internationally renowned competitions rewarding creativity and innovation in personal contemporary illustration and graphics. It encourages and supports designers in their artistic practice and offers them an internationally recognized platform from which to launch their careers.

“Young”, in this context, does not refer to the age of eligible participants but to the works that can be submitted: in the sense of “current and fresh”. There’s no age restriction! 

The main goal of the YIA is to present the partly undiscovered and vivid scene of creators from all over the world to the public and to encourage the creative exchange. These works are important statements of contemporary aesthetics, demonstrating the current visual power of the international illustration scene.

Prizes:

The 15 people that are nominated for the Young Illustrators Award obtain the possibility to show their works at the next Illustrative in Berlin.

The first three winners will gain a price of 6000 Euro and the possibility to take part in a scholarship-programm of Direktorenhaus in the following year. The Direktorenhaus’ scholarship programm includes a two-month stay in aBerlin artist house where all winnser live together and work together on projects. The scholarship ends with a common exhibition in Berlin.

Penguin Design Award!

Design a Penguin Adult or Puffin Children’s cover and you could be in with a chance to win a work placement within the Penguin or Puffin design studio as well as £1,000 in prize money.

The Penguin Design Award is an opportunity for students on an Art or Design course at HND or degree level to engage in design for publishing during their studies and to experience real jacket-design briefs first-hand.

Students may enter one design in either or both categories.

To make the process even more similar to the way a jacket designer works, once the judges have selected the shortlist, the Penguin/Puffin Art Directors will give the shortlisted entrants feedback and further art direction on their cover submissions. Shortlisted entrants will then be invited to resubmit their work, taking all the comments on board, before the final round of judging.

The closing date for entries is 12 noon (B.S.T.) on Wednesday 2 April 2014.

The shortlisted entrants will be announced on this website by Thursday 1 May 2014.

The shortlisted entrants will be contacted by Friday 2 May 2014 with feedback and further art direction on their covers, and the closing date for resubmission of their work is Monday 19 May 2014.

Children's Book Illustration Opportunity

This is a paid opportunity for an illustrator/graphic designer to work on a large-scale creative engagement project.

The Lowry is looking for an illustrator aged 18-30 to work alongside a team of theatre practitioners, storytellers and writers to illustrate, format and design a children’s storybook. The book is made in collaboration with young parents in Salford.

This is an opportunity to:

• Illustrate and design children’s story book to be published
• Work alongside a team of creative professionals from a range of art forms
• Gain experience of working with children and young people
• Work on a professional publication from start to finish in a supportive, collaborative environment
• Expand professional networks regionally and nationally

The successful application will receive a payment of £1,000. For this, they will be required to:

• Provide full colour illustrations for the book that respond  creatively and positively to the ideas of the project participants and creative professionals in the team, bringing their ideas of characters and locations to life
• Supply artwork revisions as required in the drafting process
• Undertake the graphic design and formatting of the book
• Supply high-resolution print-ready design files for any size publication, and liaise with printers
• Include all expenses

Not only is this a great chance for you to showcase your illustration talents, you will also be contributing to a great cause. The book will be published in autumn 2014 and all profits will go to support The Lowry’s work with vulnerable children and young people in Salford.

Drop-in Open Studio - Opportunity to meet professional illustrators

A drop-in open studio for you to come and meet professional illustrators at work, ask their advice and have a go at drawing yourself.

Professional and published illustrator Lauren Tobia (http://www.laurentobia.com and Brillustration www.brillustrationbristol.blogspot.co.uk) will be hosting professional illustrators who will be showing their work and demonstrating how they work. Lauren will also be working on a collaborative illustration throughout the day and inviting visitors to join in and add their drawings. Fun suitable for all ages!

Don't Panic - Calling for Contributors and Interns

The Folio Society and House of Illustration are delighted to announce the launch of The Book Illustration Competition 2014.

Now in its fourth year, this exciting collaboration between House of Illustration and The Folio Society aims to champion the art of book illustration and in 2013 received over 500 entries from across the globe. The annual international competition is open to illustrators over the age of 18, both student and professional, with the winner receiving a prestigious Folio Society commission. Previous books featured in the competition include Brave New World by Aldous Huxley, The Bloody Chamber and Other Stories by Angela Carter and The Outsider by Albert Camus.
The book to be illustrated this year is Heart of Darkness by Joseph Conrad.
Last year’s competition to illustrate Brave New World by Aldous Huxley was won by Finn Dean. Copies of the book are available to purchase from the Folio Society.
