*Brian Botting, Master of the Painter-Stainers’ Company from 2003-04, has kindly bequeathed a £5,000 annual prize to be awarded to an artist aged 30 or under for an outstanding representation of the human figure.

Rules of the Prize

The Lynn Painter-Stainers Prize is open to living artists over the age of 18, who are resident in the British Isles. Only original, two-dimensional works in any painting or drawing media, that have been completed in the last three years, and that have not been previously exhibited, are eligible. All works must be for sale, except commissioned portraits. The judges’ decision will be final and binding.

Entries will not be accepted from members of the Charity and Education Committee of the Painter-Stainers’ Company.

Conditions of Entry

Artists may submit digital images of up to four works. Works of art submitted must not exceed 60 inches (152 cms) in their largest dimension including frame.

The standard entry fee is £15 per work and student entry fee is  £8 payable at the time of entry.

The Bruntwood Prize for Playwriting - Call for Entries

The Bruntwood Prize for Playwriting is the biggest national competition for playwriting. It is the search for great new plays and great writers.

With prize money totalling £40,000, The Bruntwood Prize for Playwriting, a joint venture between property company Bruntwood and the Royal Exchange Theatre, is the UK’s biggest playwriting competition. Since its inception in 2005, over 7000 scripts have been entered, £160,000 has been awarded to 15 prize winning writers and eight winning productions have been staged.

The Bruntwood Prize for Playwriting has been responsible for launching and furthering the careers of Britain’s most promising playwrights.  Alistair McDowall – winner of Judges Award in 2011 for Brilliant Adventures – has subsequently been nominated as Best New Play in the 2013 Writers’ Guild of Great Britain and has been commissioned by the Royal Court Theatre. A new play, Pests, by Vivienne Franzmann, winner of Judges Award in 2008 opened at the Royal Exchange Theatre in March 2014 before transferring to the Royal Court Theatre and touring the UK. Duncan Macmillan, winner of Judges Award at 2005, has received critical acclaim for a new adaptation of George Orwell’s 1984, which toured the UK, produced by Headlong Theatre Company.

There will be four winners with a total prize value of £40,000.

Short Film Competition - First Prize £300

Book Illustration Competition 2015 - Now Open

This year, the book to be illustrated is the Folio Collection of Ghost Stories. The three stories you need to illustrate should be downloaded here – they are not available elsewhere.

The Book Illustration Competition is a unique partnership between House of Illustration and The Folio Society that seeks to identify and promote new talent in illustration. The annual international competition is open to illustrators over the age of 18, both student and professional, with the winner receiving a prestigious Folio Society commission.

Each year entrants are asked to submit three illustrations and a binding design for a particular book chosen by The Folio Society. The winner receives a highly sought-after commission, worth £5,000, to complete a total of nine illustrations and a binding design for the book, which is then published by The Folio Society. Five runners each receive £500 cash. Three prizes of the six are awarded to student entries.

Bristol Short Story Prize 2015 - Now Open For Entries!

Entrants must be 16 or over on the deadline date. 

The maximum length of submissions is 4,000 words (does not include title), there is no minimum length. Stories can be on any theme or subject and are welcome in any style including graphic, verse or genre-based (Crime, Science Fiction, Fantasy, Historical, Romance, Children’s etc..) .

Prizes: 

1st prize is £1,000 plus a £150 Waterstones gift card.
2nd prize is £700 plus a £100 Waterstones gift card.
3rd prize is £400 plus a £100 Waterstones gift card. 

The 2015 Bristol Short Story Prize Awards Ceremony will be held in Bristol in October 2015.

Royal Society of Literature - Short Story Competition

The Royal Society of Literature is delighted to announce the sixteenth V.S. Pritchett Memorial Prize. This prize for the best unpublished short story of the year was founded by the RSL at the beginning of the new millennium to commemorate the centenary of an author widely regarded as the finest English short-story writer of the 20th century, and to preserve a tradition encompassing Pritchett’s warmth of feeling and mastery of narrative.

The author of the winning entry will be awarded a prize of £1,000 and their story published in Prospect online and in the RSL Review. There will be an opportunity to appear at an RSL event with established short story writers in autumn 2014.

The judges for this year are Margaret Drabble, Helen Oyeyemi and Tibor Fischer.

The Clifton Arts Club annual open exhibition is a show case for artists and is held at the Bristol School of Art annually in July and attracts many professional artist throughout the South West.

Selection is done by RWA academicians and we have a very large entry – hanging approximately 350 paintings and prints, as well as sculpture, ceramics and 3D work. Many of our members have been accepted by the Bath Society and the Royal West of England Academy events.

The Renaissance Photography Prize is an international competition that showcases outstanding photography from emerging or established photographers.

All the profit raised from entries is donated to support younger women with breast cancer.

Funded Pop Video Competition

I am the manager of a Bristol based band whose second single has been mastered by Madonna's mix engineer and will be released in July 2014. We have decided to invite anyone who is able to make their own video and who wishes to have the opportunity to have their work associated with a hit song to submit their video of the single for entry to the competition. 

There are no boundaries as to what you shoot, only your imagination, it can be in any style or story line but all videos must be of the band's song and of Vevo/Youtube broadcast quality. 

Entry is free and all finished video submissions must be received no later than May 21st. 

The winning video producer will receive £500 and with two runner-up submissions each receiving a cash prize of £100 .

The Award

The Young Illustrators Award is one of the most internationally renowned competitions rewarding creativity and innovation in personal contemporary illustration and graphics. It encourages and supports designers in their artistic practice and offers them an internationally recognized platform from which to launch their careers.

“Young”, in this context, does not refer to the age of eligible participants but to the works that can be submitted: in the sense of “current and fresh”. There’s no age restriction! 

The main goal of the YIA is to present the partly undiscovered and vivid scene of creators from all over the world to the public and to encourage the creative exchange. These works are important statements of contemporary aesthetics, demonstrating the current visual power of the international illustration scene.

The 15 people that are nominated for the Young Illustrators Award obtain the possibility to show their works at the next Illustrative in Berlin.

The first three winners will gain a price of 6000 Euro and the possibility to take part in a scholarship-programm of Direktorenhaus in the following year. The Direktorenhaus’ scholarship programm includes a two-month stay in aBerlin artist house where all winnser live together and work together on projects. The scholarship ends with a common exhibition in Berlin.

Win a place on a BBC Writersroom Workshop!

IdeasTap Inspires: BBC Writersroom

Supported using public funding by the National Lottery through Arts Council England.

BBC Writersroom are giving 40 aspiring screen, stage and radio writers the opportunity to attend a practical, hands-on workshop at The Lowry, Salford. It will take place on Tuesday 8 July 2014.

The workshop will take place from 2pm to 5pm, with a free lunch being served at 1pm for all attendees.

The workshop will be delivered by Henry R. Swindell, development executive for BBC Writersroom.

After the workshop, attendees will be asked to upload scripts, based on their learning at the workshop, by the end of August. All 40 will receive a professional script report on their submitted work by the end of October. 

Before applying, please make sure that you are able to attend the workshop in Salford on Tuesday 8 July.

The winners of this brief will be announced on Friday 13 June.

Inspired by...Art Competition

Inspired by… is an art competition for people in part-time adult education, showcasing new works inspired by exhibits in the Victoria and Albert Museum’s collections. Run successfully by the V&A for a number of years, the competition has been entrusted to Morley Gallery for 2014.

Participants are invited to create a work of art or craft inspired by the collections of either the V&A South Kensington or the V&A Museum of Childhood , and to submit their entries online by 5pm, Friday 21 March 2014.

Entries will be judged by a selection panel of curators, educators and a professional designer, and selected works will be exhibited at Morley Gallery, London from 20 May - 19 June 2014.

A number of prizes will be awarded to winners in eight categories of works: Ceramics, Glass & Stained Glass, Jewellery, Sculpture, Textiles & Fashion, Theatre & Performance and Printmaking, Drawing & Painting and V&A Museum of Childhood. Special prizes will also be awarded by the V&A and NIACE, the National Institute of Adults Continuing Education.

Entrants who are unable to visit the V&A’s collections in person can access their extensive online databases with over 1,118,294 objects and 361,132 images for inspiration.

Emerging Designer-Makers Award 2014

In 2012, Living Crafts introduced a new feature to encourage fresh, original work from recently qualified Designer Makers. The Emerging Designer-Makers Pavilion was a great success, containing specially selected applicants who were able to exhibit free of charge. We are delighted that Craft&Design Magazine, widely regarded as the voice of the UK craft industry, will once again support the scheme in 2014 and will be featuring the Pavilion in forthcoming issues. Approximately 10 places are available to feature work in a variety of materials including ceramics, glass, textiles, metal, wood and mixed media.

To be eligible to enter:

• You must have completed training or gained a qualification in your chosen field of expertise since May 2011.
• Your product must be designed and made by yourself.

National Open Art Competition

The National Open Art Competition is administrated by the Chichester Art Trust, a registered charity whose aim is to provide a truly open and fair platform for all UK artists to exhibit, sell and promote their work through the medium of an annual National competition with  exhibitions in London, Chichester and other venues around the UK.

The Chichester Art Trust receives no Arts Council funding and is paid for through registration fees, donations, art sales, advertising and sponsorship.

The Campaign for Drawing, in collaboration with the Guild of St George, is launching the second year of a new art award, The John Ruskin Prize. The second John Ruskin prize is open to all amateur and professional artists 18 years and over, living and working in the UK. Recording Britain Now invites artists to present fresh, contemporary visions of their urban, rural or social environment.

Drawings, paintings, watercolours, prints, textiles, digital art and mixed media are welcome. Photographs, sculpture, sound installations and film are not eligible.

This is a unique opportunity to join the ranks of earlier well-known commentators on the state of the nation!

First Prize: £1000 and an opportunity to exhibit in the Millennium Gallery Sheffield during the major exhibition originated by the V&A, Recording Britain.

Film Poster Competition for Illustrators and Graphic Designers

Fancy yourself as the new Drew Struzan?

As part of their annual film festival in April, Birds Eye View Film Festival (BEV) will be running a film poster exhibition at the BFI Southbank, showcasing the outstanding and diverse contribution of women directors to cinema.

BEV has selected a series of iconic films by women directors, and is inviting IdeasTap’s designers and illustrators to re-create a film poster for one of the following titles:

Ten selected posters will go on display at the BFI during the festival (Tuesday 8 to Sunday 13 April). The ten posters selected for the exhibition will also be displayed on an online gallery on the Birds Eye View website.

Designs can be a graphic re-interpretation of a film still, an illustration, or a montage.

Please note you can only apply as an individual designer/artists. Group, or partnership, entries will not be considered.

The 10 winning poster designers will also be invited to join a session called Looking After Your Assets, as part of the exclusive Creative Skillset-funded Filmonomics programme.  The session will take place on Sunday 13 April 2014 at the BFI and will look at the art of poster design, and how to create the right leading image for the effective marketing of a film. The session will host filmmaking teams on the Filmonomics programme, and will be a great opportunity to meet and network with industry experts and practitioners.

The Observatory - www.lookinlookout.org: will create a unique and exciting sculptural and architectural structure, which is directly accessible by the public. It will offer artists the opportunity to engage with a specific place, providing space and shelter to undertake their investigations and share with an audience. It will be an inter-disciplinary project involving artists, other professionals and students providing creative learning opportunities throughout all phases. 

The Observatory needs to intrigue people and act as a beacon that draws attention to a place - in this case 4 very special locations along southern England from the South Downs to the Tamar estuary. The Observatory will be movable, flexible and reconfigurable. It will offer opportunities for a variety of artists (working in differing media) to create new work in response to the special locations.
