About the Local Apprenticeship Scheme

This is our biggest-ever BBC apprentice scheme – and a great chance to start your career close to home. We’re looking for 45 local apprentices to be based around England and the Channel Islands in local radio stations and Nations’ radio across Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland. It’s a 15-month apprenticeship, where you’ll work and train as an Apprentice Broadcast Assistant (England, Wales and the Channel Islands) or Apprentice Content Assistant (Scotland and Northern Ireland). You’ll find yourself helping to research and set up items on a breakfast programme, out and about gathering stories in your local area, or coming up with some great ideas for a show. You may even get a chance to broadcast live on air too.

Learn and earn

The beauty of this scheme is that you’ll be learning all the time and earning all the while. You’ll benefit from gold standard training delivered by the BBC Academy (which has trained some of the UK's top broadcasters and journalists) and our partner college. Every day, you’ll work with talented BBC colleagues. Colleagues keen to share their knowledge and experience. We’ll pay all your training costs and an apprentice salary too.

After 15 months you’ll gain a Level 3 apprenticeship in Journalism. But that’s not all. You’ll have a CV full of media work experience and great networking contacts, so you’ll be in an excellent position to compete for jobs at the BBC and the wider industry.

About you

You need to be a non-graduate and over the age of 18, with five GCSEs (ideally including Maths and English). You’re passionate about your local area, the people in it, and the stories which happen there. And you’re creative too, ready to make the most of this amazing opportunity and kick start your career in broadcasting.

About us

Educating. Entertaining. Encouraging creativity. Representing and reporting on the UK’s diverse communities at home and abroad. The BBC is a leading force in worldwide broadcasting. And with the right people on board, people like you, we’ll continue to be exactly that for years to come.
