FaB is a test-bed for the new, wonderful and sometimes odd. We encourage you to think outside the box! See links below to some curators' blogs from 2017, or visit www.fringeartsbath.co.uk for more.

FaB curators’ shows can include: performance, intervention, installation, multi-media and video work, photography, drawing, painting, sculpture and all disciplines in between.

Curating a show for FaB is a great chance to gain experience in this competitive field, to realise your own exhibition or event, to make new contacts and network. In past years FaB has initiated exchanges between artists and curators from Manchester, Swansea, Oxford, Bath, Hungary, Poland, Canada and beyond.

Selection by committee will take place in November, those selected will be invited to attend a curator’s meeting after which your show will be advertised in FaB’s November call out to artists.

FaB will offer you admin support, practical advice through regular meetings, mentoring from past curators and exhibition space.

Head of Programme/Exhibitions Curator - RWA

The RWA is seeking an outstanding individual to replace Gemma Brace as Head of Programme/Exhibitions Curator, following her recent appointment at the University of Bristol. 

The Head of Programme will lead the programme team to devise and deliver a distinctive and coherent artistic and learning programme that is international in scope and simultaneously engages with the remarkable history and cultural vibrancy of the RWA and the south west region.

As Exhibitions Curator, the post-holder will work with our Academicians, external curators, museums and galleries and private collectors in the delivery of a programme of first-class exhibitions, encompassing both contemporary and historic visual art.

Leading a team of highly professional and dedicated staff - the Learning and Participation Manager, Drawing School Manager and Curatorial Technician - the Head of Programme will oversee the development of the RWA’s ongoing vision and strategy for exhibitions, learning and outreach activities, including the RWA Drawing School. 

As a member of the Senior Management Team, the post-holder will also work with the Director to develop the strategy and delivery of the RWA’s artistic and learning programme in line with the Business Plan – with specific focus on generating increased and sustainable audience relationships and world class artistic activity.

Exhibition Curator - Accentuate History of Place

Screen South wishes to appoint an experienced Exhibition Curator to devise and deliver a ground-breaking disability history exhibition across three sites, as part of the national HLF Funded project - History of Place.  The Curator will work with the History of Place team, our Museum Partners and Record Offices to research and source original artefacts and material for three separate exhibitions at The Museum of Liverpool, Bristol Culture and The V&A, drawing this material together to tell compelling stories about the lives of deaf and disabled people in relation to built heritage.  The exhibitions will be of the highest quality and pioneering in their approach, ensuring they are representative of and accessible to, deaf and disabled people and vibrant and engaging for a range of audiences, many of whom will know nothing about deaf and disability history.  Screen South will also be recruiting an Exhibition Designer who will work closely with the Exhibition Curator.

The Exhibition Curator will be experienced in creating exhibitions of historic and contemporary material which engage diverse audiences in high-profile venues and in working with multiple-partner projects. They should also have experience of working with archival and historic material and with sourcing original artefacts as well as experience of multi-media interpretation.Please download the full brief here. 

Fee and Timescale

The total fee for the role is £11,000 + VAT to cover all costs, including travel to partner museums in Bristol, Liverpool and London.  It should be assumed that you will travel to each of these locations at least twice. The Curator will also be expected to attend Curatorial and Design Advisory Panel meetings – approximately six in total.

The role will run from June/July 2016 through to delivery of the Exhibition ending summer 2018. There will be ongoing support from the Curatorial and Design Advisory Panel and the Head of the Accentuate Programme throughout the design and delivery of the exhibition. It is anticipated that the fee will be broken down into four payments, based upon the following annual allocations:

2016/17: £7,000 + VAT
2017/18: £3,000 + VAT
On completion of final exhibition £1000 + VAT

A full timetable of work will be developed with the successful applicant and final agreement of a payment schedule will be based upon this.

Two day intensive curatorial at the Arnolfini

CURATING THE MOVING IMAGE: EXERCISING IMAGES IN THE GALLERY AND BEYOND

This two-day curatorial intensive will dynamically traverse the field of artists’ film and video exploring it both as a gallery-based installation and as a live event. Through screening and discussion, we will address the theory and practice of curating moving images.

The curatorial intensive is designed to combine an overview of the exhibition histories of artists’ film and video with screening and discussion providing an important opportunity to discuss the opportunities and challenges offered. Conversation with invited guests and curated screenings are at the centre of our programme. The intensive is divided into four sessions across two days that focus on working with moving images in relation to different sites of display from the auditorium to the gallery and beyond. In addition, we will consider different uses of film and video from screen-based presentation to its activation in sculpture and performance.

The curatorial intensive is led by Bridget Crone, with input from Al Cameron (Arnolfini) and invited guests. Bridget is a curator and writer who teaches curating at Goldsmiths, The University of London and The University of Essex. Bridget has 15 years of experience of curating in a wide variety of contexts including the Melbourne International Biennial (1999), The Showroom (2003-6) and was most recently the artistic director of Media Art Bath (2006-11), Bridget has a particular interest in curating moving image and performance-based practice, and has published a book on the subject – The Sensible Stage: Staging and the Moving Image (Picture This / Cornerhouse, 2012). She established the Film Exercise programme in 2009, which she curates with Al Cameron.

Based on the successful methodology of Film Exercise, the workshop will be based on screening and discussion with special invited guests and course attendees alike. We will exercise ideas in relation to artists’ film and video providing a forum to share our ideas, experience and practices. This is a rare opportunity to discuss the challenges and delights of curating moving images with a particular focus on artists’ film and video.

The course will be suitable for artists, curators, artist-curators, students and early-mid career professionals with an interest in artists’ film and video and moving image practice.

How to apply, costs & information

The course costs £65 in advance or £50 at a concessionary rate to students. The course will run from 10am-5.30pm on Friday 21 March, and 11am-5pm on Saturday 22 March. Basic refreshments will be provided but participants will be expected to make their own travel, accommodation and meal arrangements. 

Due to the limited capacity and social nature of the course we ask that those interested in taking part apply in writing to courses@arnolfini.org.uk stating in no more than 250 words your reasons for wanting to participate. Please include any relevant career information and date of birth. No former experience of curating is required but some evidence of knowledge and enthusiasm for the subject is essential. Curator needed at Modern Art Oxford

Modern Art Oxford is seeking an energetic and imaginative Curator of Projects & Exhibitions to work as a member of the Programme team. 

As Modern Art Oxford approaches its 50th anniversary in 2015 the gallery is seeking to reinforce its position as a centre of experimental thinking and practice around the research, production and presentation of contemporary art.

Working with the Head of Programme, Production Manager and other team members the Curator of Projects & Exhibitions will research, develop and deliver high quality activity for Modern Art Oxford’s programme in line with the gallery’s vision, history and reputation for experimentation and risk taking in contemporary art.
