Calling All Artists - Site Specific Art Piece for St Werburghs City Farm Summer Fair

TUNNEL VISION?

Calling all artists! The team behind the St Werburghs City Farm Summer Fair are looking to commission a local artist to create a site-specific art piece in one of the tunnels at the site.

The St Werburghs City Farm hosts its Summer Fair annually. It is the Farm’s largest fundraiser of the year, attracting about 4,000 visitors throughout the day. 2016’s event will be held on Saturday June 4th, and will feature music stages, food and produce stalls, crafts, licensed bars, workshops and a street procession.

The Site

There are two distinct sites of the St Werburghs City Farm. The first is the main site on Watercress Road; the second is the site at Boiling Wells. To go from one to the other, you must walk through what is known as the ‘Boiling Wells Tunnel’ (pictured below). This goes under the railway track to Temple Meads and is not to be confused with the ‘Graffiti Tunnel’ on Mina Road. The Boiling Wells tunnel is open all day, should you like to visit it.

The Challenge

As you can see below, the tunnel is rather gloomy. Not exactly the most welcoming entrance to the Boiling Wells site... Given this, the farm co-ordinators are looking to commission a work of site-specific art that will help to integrate the Boiling Wells site into the rest of the Farm Fair. We want you to respond to the event/site in any way that you please. This is a council owned tunnel, so there will have to be NO invasive work done to it.

We can provide electricity hook-ups, so AV artwork is welcomed. As this is a fundraiser for charity, we are not able to pay you, but we can cover the costs of materials (within reason!)

What’s in it for you?

This is a great opportunity to be a part of one of Bristol’s most popular summer events, and to be commissioned a site-specific piece of public art. We will give full credit to the artist who is chosen, and will also allocate you a trading pitch free of charge to sell your waresshould you like one). And that fuzzy feeling that comes with helping to make a fundraiser fabulous? That too.
