This is an open call for 2-3 2D artists (painter/drawer/illustrator) to participate in a group exhibition opening on February 26, 2014 at the Crypt Gallery, curated by Stéphane Verlet-Bottéro.
‘Live In Your Dreams’ is an exhibition aiming to reimagine the Crypt Gallery as the subconscious network of a dreaming mind. At the heart of the busiest city in Europe, anyone entering the Crypt feels instantly displaced and drawn to a state of retreat in a liminal space that operates as a radical other to the ‘above’. As much as this above could be compared to the conscious activity of a restless subject, the dark labyrinth could be thought as the site of the unexpected and the abnormal – a subterranean factory for the reconfiguration of the external order. Filling the space with dreams, the exhibition intends to explore a dialectical relationship between dreaming and artistic practice. On one hand, concerns such as freezing the ephemeral and archiving the present. These attempt to grasp the elusive and fleeting nature of dreams, whether their own, the Other’s or even collective ones on a social scale. This perspective revolves around issues of translating, filing, suspending or even manipulating dreams. On the other hand, and sometimes simultaneously, dreams can actively fuel creativity and constitute an engine of the making. This angle relates to the more buoyant forces at play in the artist’s subconscious, and open the field of fantasy. This field borders that of hallucination, delirium, perception, experience. It references the artist as a dreamer, a visionary, a loony. By engaging with this dialectical influence of dreams in the artist’s work, the exhibition project hopes to immerse the viewer in a surreal landscape revealing multiple ways in which creative practices emerge from the depth of the subconscious.
