Composer wanted

The MUSE Project is looking for a composer to create an original composition for an ambitious project taking place within a Bristol special school. 'Our Orchestra' sees the establishment of a school orchestra composed entirely of young musicians facing significant physical barriers to participation. A range of music professionals are collaborating to make the orchestra a reality, spending 9 months developing the skills of participating young musicians, with a final performance at the Colston Hall in Bristol.
We are looking for an individual who can:
  • create compositions that engage with and express the identities of its performers
  • compose for a varied and unconventional array of musical instruments including music technology
  • compose for disabled musicians with widely varying personalities and musical abilities
Work for the successful applicant will begin in January 2014. They will be required to meet with music leaders and young disabled musicians at various points over a 6 week period before providing a first draft composition. This work will provide the focus of a 6 week period of rehearsal, ending in feedback from project staff and musicians. We would anticipate that the composer would integrate this feedback into a final draft, with the final work to be submitted towards the end of April 2014.
There is a fixed fee of £3,000 available for this position (on a self-employed basis) which will include contact time with music leaders and musicians. Additional travel expenses are included but are limited and will need to be agreed. A Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) check (previously a CRB check) is mandatory for this position.
MUSE is dedicated to challenging inequality in the workplace and is active in combatting discrimination. We always ensure that equal opportunity will be given to all applicants for employment.
An online form is available to those who wish to apply for this position. This form can be found at:https://ndyo.wufoo.com/forms/our-orchestra-composer/  If you require this in an alternative, accessible format please email info@museproject.co.uk with your requirements.
Application deadline: 15th November 2013
Shortlisted applicants will be invited to interview in Bristol on 6th December.
